Can I eat or drink inside the museum?

Refreshments are only permitted in the Weisman's Dolly Fiterman Riverview Gallery. With a gorgeous view of the Mississippi River and Washington Ave. bridge, it's a favorite lunch and afternoon coffee spot. Food and drink are not permitted in the exhibition galleries, however, in order to keep the art safe. Misfit Coffee brings a cart to the museum's Riverview Gallery every Wednesday during the academic year. There isn't a restaurant or cafe at the museum, but you can find a variety of restaurants in the surrounding areas at Coffman Memorial Union, Washington Ave, and Dinkytown.

Can I take photos inside the museum?

Photography and videos (without flash or a tripod) in WAM’s public spaces and museum collection galleries for personal, noncommercial use is permitted. Occasionally, small photoshoots for noncommercial use are allowed, with prior consultation and approval. Contact Susannah Schouweiler at susannah@umn.edu for the guidelines for informal photography/video allowed in the galleries.

All commercial use photography and video must have prior approval and requires a permit and contracting fee. Contact Susannah Schouweiler at susannah@umn.edu to make a request.

For photo reproduction inquiries contact WAM’s Registration staffer MollieRae Miller, mill5482@umn.edu.

Can I host a private event at WAM?

Yes! WAM is able to host a wide variety events and functions. Please visit our Venue Rentals page to see more details.

If you're looking to book a private workshop, please review our workshop overview and prices.

What are the visitor guidelines I should know about before I come to the museum?

Following these guidelines during your visit to the museum helps to protect the artwork, so we can ensure these works remain in good condition and available for all visitors to enjoy.

  • Food and drinks are permitted in the Riverview Gallery but not in the exhibition spaces.
  • If you choose to bring smaller bags and backpacks with you into the gallery, please carry them by hand, or wear them on the front of your body. Leave large backpacks and bags in cubbies available at the front desk, while you experience the artwork in the galleries.
**WAM allows visitors with medical bags to wear them on their backs, or as needed on their body elsewhere, while in the galleries. Please request a medical bag tag, available from our front desk staff, so gallery attendants are made aware.
  • Photography (no flash) and video is permitted in the permanent collection galleries. (Some traveling exhibitions do not allow photography of artworks; signs in the gallery will indicate where photography is not permitted.)
  • Sketching in the gallery is permitted (and welcome!), but only with pencils.
  • Please don't touch, lean on, or get too close to the artwork in the galleries.

What are the current COVID-19 procedures?

Along with other public spaces and venues at the University of Minnesota, masks are welcome but not required at the Weisman. We honor and respect the fact that many people still feel more comfortable wearing a face covering, are immunocompromised, or are simply taking additional steps to protect their families or others.

Where are the accessible restrooms at WAM?

Accessible restrooms are located on the first and second floors of the museum. Gendered, multi-stall restrooms are located on the second floor and can be accessed by elevator or stairs. A single-stall all-gender restroom is located on the first floor.
